How do these platforms actually vet, and what does each method miss?
Developer hiring platforms generally use different approaches to vet candidates. The most common methods include automated screening, live technical interviews, portfolio reviews and reference checks. The important question is not how many hours a platform spends assessing someone. It is whether the assessment method actually predicts how well that person will perform the job.
A 2022 reanalysis published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that structured interviews were the strongest of these selection methods. The study estimated their validity at .42. Work sample tests came in at .33, while unstructured interviews were much lower at .19. Earlier estimates had placed work samples at .54 and unstructured interviews at .38, so the updated research is important when comparing claims about vetting quality.
The automated approach is attractive because it scales. A platform can screen thousands of applicants without putting a recruiter or engineer through every application. Index.dev, for example, describes filtering 2.5 million professionals down to a much smaller pool. Tecla uses AI screening at the first stage of its process, while Arc.dev promotes a 72 hour shortlist.
The problem is what happens at that first filter. Automated systems often rely on information such as previous employers, job titles, keywords and years of experience. These can provide useful signals, but they are still proxies for ability. A capable developer with an unusual career path can be filtered out before a human ever assesses them.
There is another problem with automated assessments in 2026. Developers increasingly use AI tools as part of their normal work. Stack Overflow's 2025 developer survey found that 51% of professional developers used AI tools daily, while 84% were using or planning to use them in their development process. JetBrains' 2026 survey of more than 15,000 professional developers found that 90% reported weekly use of AI coding agents.
That makes an unsupervised take home test harder to interpret. A candidate may complete the assessment with an AI coding agent alongside them, even if the platform describes the exercise as a test of the candidate's own ability. The number of hours spent assessing someone therefore tells you less than it once did unless the platform explains how that assessment was supervised.
The second approach is a live, structured technical interview. This is where the research is strongest. A structured interview uses a defined process rather than simply asking a candidate whatever questions come to mind. The interviewer uses predetermined questions and a consistent scoring system based on the requirements of the job.

The important question is therefore not simply whether one platform is expensive and another is cheap. It is where the developer is located, what the developer is being paid, what the platform adds on top, and how much human assessment is actually happening. A low rate can be legitimate because the underlying labour market is cheaper. A high rate can reflect higher developer costs or a more expensive service model. A monthly figure of $22,400 is considerably higher than the equivalent monthly cost of the US median compensation figure. Almost every platform in this market describes its developers as rigorous, elite or among the best in a particular percentage of its talent pool. The problem is that these claims are difficult to verify. The size of the pool can change depending on how a company defines it, and the assessment process behind the percentage is rarely published.

Revelo is not a bad choice. It is a specialised one. Its strongest advantage is clear: Latin American developers who can work within two hours of US Eastern Time, with Revelo handling the employment infrastructure around them. If that is what your team needs, the platform makes sense.
The problem starts when you try to compare Revelo with the wider remote developer market. Most platforms make similar claims about elite talent, rigorous vetting and tiny acceptance rates. Those claims sound impressive, but they are difficult to verify. Even RocketDevs' own Top 2% figure is a company reported number, and it should be treated as such.
Pricing is different. A published rate gives you something concrete. One can calculate the monthly cost. One can compare it with another platform. Is Revelo only for Latin America?
Yes, in practice. Revelo states that its engineers are based in Latin America and work within two hours of US Eastern Time. It also says that it handles payroll, benefits, taxes and compliance across 18 countries.
If you need developers in other regions, Proxify focuses on Europe, while Second Talent covers ten Asian countries with four to six hours of US overlap. Andela and Index.dev both operate global talent networks.
What is the cheapest way to hire a vetted remote developer?
Among the platforms in this comparison that publish their own rates, RocketDevs is the cheapest. Its Associate rate is $9.99/hr, which works out to about $1,598 a month at 160 hours.
Proxify publishes rates of €32 to €50 per hour, while Lemon.io publishes rates starting at $55 per hour. The remaining platforms do not publish rates that allow a reliable monthly comparison, so it is not possible to determine their true cost from public information alone.

How do developer hiring platforms vet candidates?
Most platforms combine automated screening, live technical interviews, portfolio reviews or reference checks. These methods are not equally good at predicting future job performance.
Research published by Sackett, Zhang, Berry and Lievens in 2022 ranked structured interviews at .42 predictive validity, compared with .33 for work sample tests and .19 for unstructured interviews.
The important limitation is that no platform in this comparison publishes enough detail about its interview structure, scoring rubric or assessor consistency to determine whether its process meets the research definition of a structured interview.
