Coal Reserves Determination - CRD for AER company serving Geology Reserves Group
I led the delivery of the Coal Reserves Determination (CRD) system for the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), replacing a legacy mainframe application with a modern, fully integrated COTS‑based geological modeling and reserves‑calculation platform. The goal was to enable accurate coal‑reserve calculations across Alberta townships, incorporate geological and mining‑engineering parameters, and introduce 3‑D subsurface visualization — capabilities the legacy system could not support. The project followed a stage‑gate delivery model. I managed end‑to‑end execution: requirements discovery with geology SMEs, architecture alignment, vendor evaluation (RFI/RFP), and full implementation with the selected COTS provider. I coordinated the work of the Business Analyst, Solution Architect, vendor development team, and internal IT integration teams. I also established the Steering Committee, managed stakeholder expectations, and ensured alignment across business, technical, and regulatory groups. During execution, I oversaw solution design, configuration, integration, data preparation, and the creation of a 3‑tier Operational Support Model. I led multiple rounds of UAT based on defined acceptance criteria, managed risks and dependencies, and ensured the system met all functional, performance, and visualization requirements. The project was delivered successfully, meeting the Go‑Live milestone and enabling AER’s Coal Reserves group to retire the legacy system and adopt a significantly more capable and efficient solution.
