RocketDevs vs Upwork: common questions
Is RocketDevs a good Upwork alternative?
It depends on what you want to own. Upwork is an open marketplace: you write the post, read the proposals, run the interviews, and carry the risk if the hire misses. RocketDevs does the screening first and sends you developers who already cleared a 6 to 8 hour assessment with a 98%+ rejection rate. If you would rather review two or three real candidates than fifty proposals, RocketDevs is the better fit.
How much does RocketDevs cost compared to Upwork?
RocketDevs publishes flat hourly rates: $9.99/hr for Associate, $21.99/hr for Mid-senior, and $30.99/hr for Senior. An Associate working full-time is about $1,598 a month. On Upwork every freelancer sets their own bid rate, and Upwork's published client pricing adds a service charge plus a contract-initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99, all disclosed up front, so your effective cost varies by hire. RocketDevs pricing is the same number for every client, with no bidding and no negotiation.
How does RocketDevs vetting compare to Upwork?
Upwork verifies identity and surfaces work history, badges, and client feedback, then leaves the technical judgement to you. There is no universal technical screen across the marketplace, so quality assurance is not standardised from one freelancer to the next. RocketDevs runs its own assessment: 6 to 8 hours per developer covering live coding, systems thinking, and communication, with a 98%+ rejection rate. In 2025 we assessed 11,422 applicants and placed 223, which is 1.95%. Only the top 2% reach a client call.
Can I hire a developer part-time or full-time?
Both. RocketDevs is flexible on engagement: book part-time hours or a full week, and change it as the work changes. For the hours you book you get someone in your standups and your codebase rather than someone handing over a packaged gig. Time is tracked with screenshots every 3 minutes, so the hours you pay for are visible. More than 500 client companies hire this way.
What happens if the developer is not a fit?
You get a 14-day money-back guarantee. Tell us inside the first two weeks and you can take the refund or we replace the developer. No notice period, no exit fee, no argument about whose fault it was.
Can I hire the developer directly later?
Yes, and the terms are written down rather than negotiated case by case. You give RocketDevs prior written notice, agree a reasonable wind-down period for the developer, which may be 30 days, and pay a flat buyout fee set by level: USD $5,000 for Level 1 Junior, USD $7,000 for Level 2 Mid-senior, and USD $9,000 for Level 3 Senior. If the level is not stated in the Talent Outline Plan, Level 3 applies. It is a capped published figure, not a percentage of salary. The cooling off period is twelve months: it runs while the developer works for you plus 12 months after, or 12 months from the introduction date if you never engage them, and it covers only the individual developer we introduced to you rather than our wider network. Once it expires, no buyout fee is payable at all.
Upwork leaves the screening to you, we do it before you interview.
